ATLiens Ain't Changed

OUTKAST-TWO DOPE BOYZ (IN A CADILLAC)

Outkast is Andre 3000 and Big Boi, two MCs bringing that old school g-funk and southern style. They are an incredibly successful duo in terms of album sales and popularity, but their older albums are in my opinion much better than their releases as of late. This is one of my favorite classic Outkast tracks, off the ATLiens released in 1996 and produced by Organized Noize

This is it WHAT

CAMP LO-LUCHINI AKA THIS IS IT

CAMP LO-COOLIE HIGH

CAMP LO-SPARKLE

Camp Lo is a hip hop duo formed in '95 by Sonny Cheeba (Salahadeen Wilds) and Geechi Suede (Saladine Wallace). All these tracks are off their Uptown Saturday Night album (1997), which is my favorite release by them and also their first. It's got a lot of jazz and funk inspired beats and I love their back and forth flow so give it a listen

Had to Hustle Hard, Never Give Up

MASTA ACE-DA GRIND FEAT. APOCALYPSE

Track has a sick bass line, if you don't have a solid pair of headphones or a sub you really can't appreciate a whole other dynamic to this music so I recommend upgrading. This comes off A Long Hot Summer by Masta Ace and features Apocalypse. Khrysis does the production, and you can see him doing work with the Justus League along with 9th Wonder.

One time, For your Mind

KEITH MURRAY-THE RHYME (JAY DEE REMIX)

One of my favorites by the greatest of all time, J Dilla aka Jay Dee aka James Dewitt Yancey. This track's off Keith Murray's Enigma album (1996). The remix is actually on the album itself with the original track, and is credited to The Ummah. The Ummah was a music production collective made up of Q-Tip and Ali Shaheed Muhammad (A Tribe Called Quest) and Dilla (Slum Village). They produced a lot of late 90's tracks with that distinct sound. You can always tell a Dilla beat. Nothing more really needs said about this track its one of my favorites so give it a spin

Now Who's Laughing?

DJ WICH & RASCO-NOW WHOS LAUGHING

pretty sick song by DJ Wich, one of Czech's most popular/famous DJ's, and Rasco, an American rapper from San Francisco. This tracks off DJ Wich's The Untouchables: Al Capone's Vault. If your a Lil Wayne fan... DJ Wich did a pretty sick Imogen Heap remix called What We Need sampling Hide N Seek by Imogen Heap and featuring Glasses Malone. Ciao

I SAID NIGGA THATS THE POINT

LITTLE BROTHER-DREAMS

Somehow I can't believe I didn't start off the blog with this song... this is THE song that got me into dank beats. For years I was a classic 60s 70s rock fan (still am) and absolutely hated hip hop and rap. Well, after a few bowls and this song accidentally coming on here we are today; a hip hop head. Little Brother will always have a special place in my heart and I'll do some more on them later on below but this song is a mandatory must listen. Lyrically, it is out of this world it gives me chills to listen to it to be honest.

Little Brother, coming out of Durham, North Carolina, was comprised of two rappers, Phonte and Rapper Big Pooh, and their producer 9th Wonder, an up and coming who is reminiscent of Dilla in his sample and beat production. This songs off the GetBack album released in 2007 which is the first without 9th Wonder (and as a result the production quality is pretty downgraded.. with exceptions like this song. Also generally reviewed as a disappointing album...although not necessarily true in my opinion). Sadly, LB broke up in 2010 and hip hop lost one of its most influential groups of the modern era.

LITTLE BROTHER-LOVIN' IT

LITTLE BROTHER-ALL FOR YOU

LITTLE BROTHER-THE LISTENING

LITTLE BROTHER-PLAYIN TO LOSE

LITTLE BROTHER FEAT MOS DEF-LET IT GO (DJ DRAMA VERSION)

(Drama's drops are so immature and rididculous if you can find the version without them its so much tighter cause its a hot song....)

Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People?

GANGSTARR-MOMENT OF TRUTH

Song was sent to me by a friend tonight... always been a big Gang Starr fan but haven't heard this one since I don't know when and its a classic. Gang Starr formed in '88 with DJ Premier (legend!) and Guru as the MC... they released a significant volume of albums and tracks and Moment of Truth is off the similarly titled album Moment of Truth released in '98. In my opinion, their most critically acclaimed album. Check it out if you want some lyrically gifted thoughts to rattle around that empty dome piece of yours

Lock and Load

IMMORTAL TECHNIQUE- INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION

Immortal Technique (Felipe Coronel, born in Lima, Peru in the late 70's) was showed to me originally by this hispanic kid in my tenth grade chem class... but as a suburban white boy listening to punk rock at the time I couldn't come close to appreciating his messages or music. Nowadays I am a big Technique fan, as his political focused rhymes are essentially untouchable. How is he not bigger? He sum's it up best in this song with the line, "No ones as good as good as me, they just got better marketing schemes." His anti-corporation attitude has led to his extreme creative control over his music which turns off record companies, and as a result he's find it hard to grow publicly but musically his development has been exponential. This track comes off Revolutionary Vol.2, put out by Viper Records in '03. Metaphysics provides the production, but the beat is not the key part of this song. Pay close attention to his filthy lyrical ability here

Keep It Real in this Rap Game

DJ CAM- VOODOO CHILD (feat. AFU-RA) (DJ PREMIER REMIX)

Sick track by French producer DJ Cam and Afu-ra which was remixed by DJ Premier who did a amazing job on the beat. This track was originally off of DJ Cam's Soulshine (2002). DJ Premier (Christopher Edward Martin) is recognized as one of the greatest producers of all time and got his start being one half of the classic hip hop due, Gang Starr. Afu-ra is also a member of the Gang Starr Foundation. Can't really find the original cut anywhere, but without even hearing it I can already tell Premier is the sole reason this track is getting its name out there. Enjoy

Wait you still listen to rap..?

COOL CALM PETE- WISHES AND LUCK

Cool Calm Pete is another new find of mine, joining Nujabes in the new era of Asian influenced hip hop (he was born in Seoul, Korea). His rap isn't quite up to par as some other artists but the production here speaks for itself despite being by a relatively unknown producer (Ed Live). He's also a member of Babbeltron who I've yet to dig into but will be soon. This track is off CCP's debut album, Lost (2005) which was largely self produced. He has dabbled in some ventures since then but nothing quite as popular so I've yet to dig through them but keep your ears open

Woke up..

and realized I left off one of my favorite People Under the Stairs tracks... can't forget this song that bass is so solid

PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS- THE BREAKDOWN

Quoi de Neuf

DELA- FUCK MONEY (remix) (feat. Enz & Tasco)

Dela is by far my favorite modern day producer so expect to see a lot more posts with tracks by him. I could have chosen a large number for this first Dela song, but being that he is a French producer (I've actually spoken to him through FaceBook and his French is much better than his English) I chose to go with a song featuring artists from his native country. Fuck Money comes off his first Atmosphere Airlines compilation, which was released in 2007. Dela is a pretty young guy with a ton of potential, I really think he has the ability to become one of the greats. I understand it may be hard to experience a track in a language we can't understand so stay tuned for more Dela as you do not want to sleep on this kid

Do Things That Make the Man in the Moon Blush

Q-TIP- LET'S RIDE

If you don't know who Q-Tip is you've really been missing out on a phenomenal rapper.. Kamaal Ibn John Fareed, more often known by his stage name of Q-Tip (although lately going by "The Abstract" due to his dislike of this childhood nickname, is a member of the acclaimed A Tribe Called Quest and has grown into a respected producer and solo artist. This particular song came off the album Amplified (1999) and features production by my favorite, J Dilla. The beat is so funky and the guitar sample interlaced with the drums is exactly suited to Q-Tip's style. A really excellent track

Just About Ready to Do That Thing

Ok so this blog post is dedicated to, in my opinion, one of the best hip hop duo's to be still releasing music. Of course I'm talking about People Under the Stairs; a mesh of DJ/MC Double K and MC Thes One. Formed in Los Angeles in 1997, PUTS have released seven albums to date. My personal favorite of these is O.S.T. (Original Soundtrack) but for your sampling pleasure I will post a collection of my favorite PUTS's tracks across the years. If your only going to listen to one check out the first, Acid Raindrops, as it is the epitome of PUTS's work, and besides it'll inspire you to listen to the rest

Just a brief selection of some choice PUTS cuts...enjoy!

I Stand Alone Like the Cheese

Emanon-The Words

Emanon is a hip-hop duo comprised of rapper Aloe Blacc and producer Exile; both notable artists in their own right. Together they combined forces on the album The Waiting Room (2005). Exile's production on this track is so smooth and intricate it really compliments Aloe's flow... my only complaint with this track is that Aloe should never be allowed to sing. The chorus is terrible in my opinion and really degrades the song but overall the track is just too chill to not mention.

Open Minded like a Pothead

COMMON-THE SUN GOD

Lonnie Rashid Lynn, better known as Common Sense, better known still as Common; is one of the best rappers out there as far as conscious hip hop. This track comes off a compilation album featuring production by DJ Hi-Tek entitled HI-Teknology (2001). The beat here is relatively uplifting and the lyrics give you a psuedo-spiritual feeling. Vinia Mojica provides the female vocals on the track. Ciao

Keep it Movin like the Energizer Rabbit

CONSEQUENCE- THE JAM (REMIX)

Found this guy pretty recently although he's a cousin of Q-Tip. His real name is Dexter Raymond Mills, Jr. but he goes by Consequence and you can find him making several appearances on A Tribe Called Quest albums. Track is off his 2005 album "A Tribe Called Quence: 1995-2004" which is a compilation of some of his work... this song was originally on Beats, Rhymes, and Life which was released by Tribe in 1996. This re release features new production by Grown Man Music, which I actually find suits the verses better. See what you think...

Try'n to bring the underground to the surface..

ILLA J-DFTF (feat. AFFION CROCKETT)

ILLA J- ALL GOOD

Illa J (John Yancey) is the kid brother of my favorite producer, the immortal J Dilla, R.I.P.... we'll get more into Jay Dee at a later post. But for now enjoy these two tracks off his Yancey Boys album that came out in 2008. All the beats including these are Dilla produced circa the Labcabincalifornia era so that should give you a general idea of the production on the beat. Illa isn't quite up to the MC standards of his older brother but the beats are solid enough that it carries the song making for some nice tracks to chill out too and break the ice. Enjoy

Vomitspit

Welcome all I invite you to roll one up and check out my collection of tunes. This blog is dedicated to spinning only the deepest of hip hop cuts, ranging from my favorite classics to the new digs I've turned up as of late. Cheers
